What is an eye exam?
There are various eye tests that can be done to measure numerous parameters of your vision. Reading an eye chart (called a Snellen eye chart) is the most popular and simplest eye exam, to measure your visual acuity. The eye chart consists of several lines of text (the size of the text reduces as you go down), and if you can read the lowest lines of text with each eye, your visual acuity is quite good.
Eye exams, however, don’t measure other parameters of your vision, such as peripheral vision, depth perception, contrast perception, or color perception. For these metrics, there are other designated eye tests such as color blindness tests, ocular motility testing (to measure eye movements), stereopsis test (depth perception test).
There are also eye exams dedicated to certain health conditions like glaucoma or diabetes. Glaucoma tests consist of measuring your eye pressure, where a machine blows air at your eyes and calculates how well your eyes can resist it. A higher eye pressure indicates a higher risk of developing glaucoma.
Common eye health issues
If you’re after an eye doctor in Houston, to diagnose a particular eye condition, we have qualified specialists for various conditions such as glaucoma and diabetes. Some common eye conditions include cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Cataracts occur when the lens of our eye becomes damaged over time as a result of aging, leading to blurry or unfocused vision. Symptoms include blurry vision, poor night vision, and increased glare. Cataract surgery is used to replace them with intraocular lenses.
Glaucoma happens when eye pressure becomes too high and damages the optic nerve. Macular degeneration is also a leading contributor to poor vision, which occurs with the deterioration of the macula. There is currently no medical solution for macular degeneration, with treatments only slowing down its development.
Why are eye exams so important?
Your eyesight is obviously vital for day-to-day life. The problem is that some eye conditions are very subtle and silent while developing, and they only reveal themselves when they’ve caused significant vision loss. This is why macular degeneration affects many people because it’s hard to detect the early signs unless you do an eye exam.
As evident in many surveys, a lot of people underestimate the seriousness of eye conditions. In the UK, a survey revealed that people only do eye check-ups once every six to ten years. Ideally, it’s good to do one every two years and more if you’re older or wear glasses.
If you’re experiencing eye fatigue or vision loss and suspect a more serious condition, contact Eye Theory. Our specialist eye doctor in Houston are qualified to treat various conditions from glaucoma to macular degeneration.Eye Doctor Houston
